Welcome to Get Set North Events,
Tommy 10K Memorial Run
The Tommy 10K Memorial Run takes place along the coastline in Seaham. The race starts and finishes by the Tommy War Memorial draped in history for those who have fought and lost their life’s during the great wars from in and around the local area.
Tommy is a statue of a First World War soldier by artist Ray Lonsdale, displayed close to Seaham war memorial, on Terrace Green by the seafront in Seaham, County Durham.
The corten steel statue weighs 1.2 tonnes (1.2 long tons; 1.3 short tons) and is 9 feet 5 inches (2.87 m) tall, with a rusty red patina. It depicts a First World War soldier, wearing boots, puttees, greatcoat and tin hat, sitting on an ammunition box, with downcast eyes, holding the barrel of his grounded rifle in his right hand. It is officially named 1101 (or Eleven-O-One), referring to the first minute of peace as the armistice came into force at 11am on 11 November 1918, but is more popularly known as Tommy, referring to the archetype private soldier Tommy Atkins.
The run route is a fairly flat route starting at the Tommy Memorial on Seaham front. Runners proceed around the memorial onto the B1267 turning right. The course then continues for 3.1 miles through Seaham passed Seaham hall towards Sunderland. The road has a number of bends so care needs to be taken, especially on the return route where there maybe runners on the other side of the road passing and heading back in towards Seaham. Runners then proceed all the way along the B1267 joining the A1018. Runners continue on the A1018 for 1 mile until they come to roundabout and then come around this to rejoin the A1018 to head back towards Seaham. You then continue on the A1018 for 1 mile to rejoin the B1267 heading back towards keeping to the left handside of the road as you will encounter runners on the opposite side of the road. Runners then once they get into Seaham will finish under the race gantry next to the Tommy Memorial.
